The lens outperforms my AF-S ED 105/2.8G: sharper and with way less LoCA.
However, side-by-side comparative tests showed a smoother bokeh and more pleasant rendition of out-of-focus background of the "old" Micro-Nikkor. The 105 MC bokeh is good, but the Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8G's is better. This, combined with slightly lower sharpness, makes the "old" 105G rendering preferable for portraiture.
I compared the105 MC to my Zeiss 100/2 Makro-Planar. The 105 MC has a slightly different color rendition, is slightly sharper and has much less LoCA at the wider apertures.
The built quality of the 105 MC is more plasticky than the old 105/2.8G and the Zeiss, which is built like a tank and will last for decades for sure. I wouldn't bet on how many years the 105 MC will last...
In conclusion, the 105 MC is a very good lens that can be used for portraiture and landscape too; it's optical scheme ensures quite good performance. Its built quality (as witnessed by its relatively low weight) is inferior to other pro-grade macro lenses.
